BFP Summary of Activities 2009
Iraq / Iran / Afghanistan / Pakistan
2009 Marked the 8th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and an escalation of the War In Afghanistan. President Obama decided to send 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan categorically doubling the number of troops in the country.

Anti-militarism (counter-recruitment)
Since Kings County has one of the nation's highest rates of military enrollment, we have taken on the challenge of cutting off this source of person-power for the war machine. Ongoing distribution of Our leaflets "How to Go to College Without Joining the Military" (PDF) and "How to Travel and Have Adventures Without Joining the Military" , as well as our newly developed brochure (PDF) "What You Should Know Before Joining the Military," which features the insight of returning Iraq War vets at Brooklyn public high schools, along with information for students and parents informing them about how they can "opt-out" of the school releasing their personal information to military recruiters. We have continued our campaign to have the $2.4 million dollars of NYC tax-payer money allocated in the budget to fund Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps programs in NYC public schools removed from the budget.

UNICEF
"Trick or Treat for UNICEF" continued our campaign to foster international awareness and social responsibility among elementary school children.
Help our children realize that we are all global citizens. Raise money to help UNICEF provide clean water, nutrition, immunizations, schools, healthcare, and emergency aid for children in over 150 countries. October 31, 2009 (Halloween!)
Israel-Palestine
Beginning in January and in light of Israel’s one sided offensive against Gaza, Brooklyn For Peace began to put pressure on President Obama to uphold his campaign promises for a change in foreign policy.
- On January 14th Brooklyn For Peace organized a vigil and rally at Borough Hall.
- On January 19th, Brooklyn For Peace published an Open Letter to President Obama in the Courier Life highlighting the urgent need to change the policy of providing “blank-check” support for Israel as it pursues state security through occupation and military force.

Darfur/Africa
Monthly vigils at the U.S. Mission to the U.N., in conjunction with NYC Coalition for Darfur: call for effective action by the U.S. to end the mass killings and genocide in Darfur; to urge U.S. to give support pledged to UNAMID, and to raise awareness of conditions in the refugee camps for internally displaced persons in Darfur.

Event
Brooklyn Get Radical on October 18th. A benefit concert for Brooklyn For Peace celebrating 25 years of community activism for Peace and Justice in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Get Radical, was a night of hip hop, jazzy soul, spoken word poetry and dancing hosted by MC K-Swift and featuring performances by Kahlil Mustafa, Veronica Nunn, Chesney Snow, Stephanie Rooker, Readnex Poetry Squad, Intangible Collective and DJ sets by Ohio Party DJ’s, and Blockhead and Despot of Definitive Jux label.
Nuclear Zero
Nuclear Zero is a new committee formed in 2009 advocating for an end to nuclear proliferation, and complete nuclear disarmament by all countries including the United States. A Town Hall Meeting was held on October 14, with speaker John Burroughs, Executive Director, Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy.

Media Outreach
"War No More" is our once-monthly show on Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT), making our forums and programs available to those who could not be there in person. These programs are also available on DVD.
Intern and Volunteer Opportunities
We provided opportunities for young people to engage in a concrete and practical way with our peace and justice work by offering opportunities for volunteers (particularly high school students with community service requirements, as well as energetic retirees) and interns (who receive a modest stipend).
